OSEAN's Special Guest Presentation!
To welcome the summer of 2026, OSEAN is pleased to invite you to a special seminar.
We are honored to host Dr. Carl Berg, Senior Scientist and Advisory Committee Member at the Kauaʻi Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, as our seminar speaker.
This lecture goes beyond a standard presentation of research findings, offering a unique opportunity to hear directly from the author about the core of the research and the stories behind the paper. Dr. Berg has worked on water quality issues in Hawaiʻi for nearly 30 years and, since 2020, has led an international collaborative effort to better understand a growing and often overlooked threat washing up on Hawaiʻi’s shores: eel trap gear.
The seminar will focus on a topic of growing concern: not only documenting the scale of the eel trap problem, but also tracing eel traps back to their sources and identifying practical solutions. Rather than approaching the issue as an abstract environmental concern, the lecture highlights an international collaborative effort involving researchers, citizen scientists, fishing communities, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies across the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Together, these groups are working to understand how abandoned and lost eel trap gear travels across the North Pacific and threatens marine wildlife, particularly endangered Hawaiian monk seals.
As this is a direct lecture by a leading international expert, the seminar will be conducted in English. We believe it will provide valuable insights for anyone interested in marine ecosystem conservation, and we warmly encourage your participation.
